The Last of My Tropical Flowers

Ginger Lily (Hedychium gardnerianum)
It's Autumn here in Australia and, one would think, getting a bit cooler during the day and a nice, fresh, crispness in the air. Oh no! Here in Brisbane, we've had temperatures in the low to mid 30's this week and I think the tropical plants in my front garden are thinking "what happened to Autumn - I thought we were done for the year?".

Bromeliad - Billbergia pyramidalis
I have many species of bromeliad and I love them for being low maintenance, great ground covers, very drought tolerant and self sufficient.

Flowers aren't out for long before they start to fade in colour.
I love loved my front garden. Before kids, it was beautifully maintained, although it's a pretty low maintenance garden. It's full of tropical species and I prefer colourful foliage rather than flowers to keep all year round colour. We have a pond with a waterfall and quite an ecosystem happening with lots of lizards, frogs, spiders and every other kind of bug you could imagine. It's empty at the moment and in need of a good clean. We can't keep the water up to it because of the evaporation from the heat. Didn't have any problems back in December/January with all the rain.

Since the kids came, it's become quite overgrown and needs a good cutting back and a few garden beds replenished with new plants, made from cuttings of existing plants.

Another job to add to the ever growing list.

1.'re fancy. I like your new background design. I lOVE your flowers too. Nothing like that here. Although, it's spring so our lovely flowers are just coming up.

  2. I thought of you the other night Megan when we watched a program filmed in Virginia. (It was the UK TV program "Top Gear" and they were driving fast cars around the Blue Ridge Parkway. Are you near there?) I was trying to get a feel for the environment. I would expect a lot of snow in winter and nice and warm in summer.

  3. I seriously loѵе your sіte.

Pleаse reply back aѕ Ι'm wanting to create my very own site and want to learn where you got this from or just what the theme is called. Many thanks!
