In light of the fact that next Saturday will be our national day, Australia Day, I thought I'd take a trip down memory lane to my all time favourite Australian bands.
I feel very lucky to have been a teenager in the late 70's and young adult through to the 80's. Besides the disco, new wave, punk and mod trends of these times, there was the good old Aussie band that did the 'pub' tour. There were the famous Aussie exports like the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, AC/DC, Air Supply and INXS but those bands I used to see for about $8 a ticket at the suburban pub were just the best. So many great songs, great memories, great rock'n'roll beat and songs that remain etched in my memory forever.
So, my three (I'll only list 3 - there are so many) favourite Australian band's songs from the late 70's and 80's, in honour of Australia Day, are:
Cold Chisel - "My Baby" 1980
(They were starting to get a bit more famous in these days so only played the bigger venues.)
The Angels - "Take A Long Line" 1978
Mental As Anything - "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" 1979
I'm linking up with Cass Can Sew's "Sunday Sessions".

Happy Australia Day to you, Anne. Have you stopped over to see the visiting young man from YASS who was such a big help to me yesterday? I too felt our music was great in the 70's ! and 80's.
ReplyDeleteHappy Australia Day! I hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, these certainly are classic Aussie hits aren't they? thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI am showing my youth here but I haven't heard of The Angels. But I love Cold Chisel and Mental as Anything!

Amy!!! Are you serious? lol.... Am I ever gonna see your face again... no way get $(^$* f off..... you've got to know that one ;-)
DeleteGreat choices. I often forget how many good bands, particularly pub bands, that were produced in Australia in the 70s and 80s. Happy Australia Day for next week! Kirsty @ My Home Truths
ReplyDeleteAwesome picks! I really did grow up in the wrong decade. Tony tells me the best stories about seeing these Aussie rock icons in pubs. I remember my Mum going to those gigs (once in a while) when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteCoincidently... The Stonehavens are playing Take a long line at an Australia Day bbq next weekend as their cover song of the day!
Thanks for linking up again lovely xx
Great songs to play for Australia!!
ReplyDeleteI love all of those songs!! Great choices :)
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing the Bee Gees perform at Smoky Dawson's Ranch in the early to mid 60s. I still have their autographs from that day. In the 70s we saw Olivia Newton John and all the men were besotted with her.
